About event

Adikavi is a landmark musical dance ballet presented by Jeevan Jyoti Performing Arts, celebrating the extraordinary life and enduring spiritual legacy of the 15th-century saint-poet Narsinh Mehta, revered as the Adikavi—the First Poet of Gujarati literature.

Blending music, dance, drama, and devotion, this pioneering production is the first large-scale ballet dedicated to Narsinh Mehta’s journey from silence to spiritual enlightenment. More than a biographical retelling, Adikavi is a powerful artistic experience that explores faith, compassion, creativity, and the transformative power of divine grace.

Creative Vision

Conceived, scripted, and artistically directed by Punita Patel, Adikavi is a carefully crafted cultural masterpiece that brings together historical narrative, classical aesthetics, and contemporary stagecraft. Through compelling storytelling and immersive performance, the production bridges centuries of devotional heritage, presenting Narsinh Mehta’s life as a timeless and universal journey of spiritual awakening.

From Silence to Song

At the heart of the ballet lies the remarkable story of Narsinh Mehta’s early life.

Born mute and unable to speak, the young Narsinh endures years of silence before retreating into the solitude of the forest in search of divine truth. According to legend, a sacred encounter with Lord Shiva and a vision of the celestial Raas Leela transformed his destiny. Blessed with the gift of speech, he uttered his first poetic verses, marking the birth of a literary and spiritual tradition that continues to inspire generations.

Through evocative choreography, dramatic storytelling, and soul-stirring music, this transformative moment unfolds as one of the production’s most moving and memorable sequences.

Musical and Poetic Essence

The ballet is enriched by a live musical score led by acclaimed vocalist and composer Shri Vaibhav Mankad, creating a deeply immersive spiritual atmosphere.

The production seamlessly weaves together the traditions of Hindustani and Carnatic music. The Tabla and Sitar anchor the Hindustani passages, while the Mridangam drives the rhythmic energy of the Carnatic segments. Violin and Flute serve as melodic bridges, uniting both traditions into a harmonious and transcendent soundscape.

Featured Musical Highlights

  • Raag Kedar – Presented in the celebrated Hundi episode, symbolizing the legendary raga that Narsinh Mehta is said to have pledged, only to be redeemed through Lord Krishna’s divine intervention.
  • Raag Malhar – Brought to life in a breathtaking sequence where Mehta’s devotional singing invokes life-giving rain upon a drought-stricken land.

The production also features some of Narsinh Mehta’s most beloved compositions, including his devotional Prabhatiya, the philosophical masterpiece Akhil Brahmand Ma, and the universally cherished hymn Vaishnav Jan To.

A Tapestry of Classical Dance

Performed by an ensemble of 18 accomplished dancers, Adikavi unfolds through the expressive beauty of three distinguished Indian classical dance traditions:

  • Bharatanatyam – Providing rhythmic precision, emotional depth, and powerful storytelling through Abhinaya.
  • Kathak – Bringing fluid grace, intricate footwork, and the narrative richness of the Krishna Bhakti tradition.
  • Odissi – Adding lyrical elegance and sculptural beauty that enhances the ballet’s spiritual imagery.

Together, these classical forms create a visually stunning and emotionally resonant portrayal of Narsinh Mehta’s divine experiences, poetic genius, and unwavering devotion.

An Unforgettable Cultural Experience

Adikavi is more than a performance—it is a celebration of Gujarat’s literary heritage, India’s rich classical arts, and the timeless values of faith, empathy, and devotion. Through music, dance, and storytelling, audiences are invited to witness the life of a poet-saint whose message continues to inspire humanity across generations.
